Conquering Food Allergies: Two Decades of Personalized Care from Dr. Mayer
If you’re tired of avoiding certain foods or always carrying an epinephrine auto-injector, you don’t have to navigate food allergies alone. With more than 20 years of experience, Dr. Mayer can help you explore your treatment options. Learn more here.

Most people with serious food allergies do two things for the rest of their lives. First, they avoid the allergen like the plague. Secondly, they carry around an epinephrine auto-injector just in case.

You don’t have to assume that’s your fate, though. Chad W. Mayer, DO, has more than two decades under his belt using oral immunotherapy (OIT), sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT), and other treatments to help people with food allergies, even serious ones like tree nuts and shrimp.

If you’re living with a food allergy, make an appointment at Allergy and Asthma Institute of Southeast Michigan in Farmington Hills, Michigan. John Frith, DO, recently joined our team, contributing his expertise and experience to Dr. Mayer’s 20+ years.

We’re here to help you explore life beyond the EPIPEN®.

Your options for addressing food allergies

Dr. Mayer has seen success helping people with food allergies by deploying one or a combination of these treatments:

Oral immunotherapy (OIT)

OIT works by desensitizing you to the food allergen. Treatment starts with a full day at our office for rapid desensitization. During this time, we give you a controlled dose of the allergen, then carefully monitor you. We repeat this a few times.

You then go home with a daily dose to take.

Each week, you return to our office to see if your body can handle more of the allergen. With careful monitoring of your every up-dose, we help prevent an adverse reaction.

Over time, your daily doses and periodic updosing help your body get used to the allergen. We work with you to get you to the point at which a daily maintenance dose keeps your allergy controlled.

Dr. Mayer or Dr. Frith can help you determine if you’re a candidate for OIT.

Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT)

SLIT similarly helps your body respond less aggressively to food allergies. Sublingual means “under the tongue.” By allowing the allergen to interact with the cells in your mouth, it can help your body build a tolerance.

XOLAIR®

Dr. Mayer was one of the first allergists to successfully use XOLAIR to treat food allergies. This injection-based treatment can help with everything from hives to asthma, but it can also help minimize reactions to food allergens.

Finding the right food allergy treatment for you

At our office, Dr. Mayer and Dr. Frith can evaluate your allergen, your specific allergic response, and other factors specific to you. This helps them determine which food allergy treatment is most likely to benefit you. In some cases, they may recommend a combination of treatments.

Our goal is to help patients reach a point where accidental exposure doesn’t sidetrack their day, or their life.
